The Medical Aid in Dying Process in NJ
Step 1- First verbal request: You make an initial oral request to your attending physician, who must document it in your medical record.
Physician evaluation: The attending physician must confirm you meet all eligibility criteria. If there are concerns about your capacity, you will be referred for a psychological or psychiatric evaluation.
Step 2- Written request: You submit a written request to your attending physician, signed by you in the presence of two witnesses. At least one witness must be unrelated to you.
Wait period: A minimum of 15 days must pass between your first and second verbal requests. After your second verbal request, a minimum of 48 hours must pass before the prescription can be written.
Step 3- Second verbal request: You make a second verbal request after the 15-day waiting period has passed.
Consulting physician confirmation: A consulting physician must confirm your diagnosis and mental capacity to participate in MAID.
Prescription: The attending physician writes a prescription for the life-ending medication.
Step 4- Self-administration: You self-administer the medication at a time of your choosing.Â
