Frequently Asked Questions

What is MAID?

Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) is an end of life option that allows an adult New Jersey resident, who has the capacity to make health care decisions and who has been determined by that individual's attending and consulting physicians to be terminally ill, to obtain medication that the patient may self-administer to end the patient’s life.

How do I know if I qualify?

How do I end my life?

Your physician will prescribe medications that you will self administer.

What is the medication that I will self administer?

You will receive a “cocktail” of medications. Medications prescribed consist of sedatives and cardiotoxins. Medications come in a powder form which will need to be mixed with fluid. You will need to consume 4 oz of fluid within 2 minutes.

What if I can’t drink 4 oz of fluid in 2 minutes?

Other options are available for those who can not consume medication by mouth.

Will I be awake and alert?

You will be awake and alert during the time of self administration. After consuming the medication you will fall asleep and then enter a coma within 10 minutes.

Is MAID suicide?

No. MAID is not suicide. Your death certificate will reflect your terminal diagnosis.

How long is the process?

The process takes a minimum of 18 days from beginning to end. It is recommended to begin the process immediately since terminally ill patients can decline fast.

Am I obligated to end my life once I receive the medication?

No. You are able to withdraw from the process at any time. You have complete autonomy.

Do I have to be on hospice?

No. You do not need to be receiving hospice services to initiate MAID. However, I strongly recommend hospice services for all terminally ill patients.

Do you accept insurance?

No. I charge a fee for service. Please reach out to discuss payment options.

Can you be with me when I self administer the medication and end my life?

Yes, I would be honored to be present during your end of life journey. However, I will not be able to administer the medication. The terminally ill patient must self administer the medication.
